The charm of regular careers like banker and doctor has lost its charm amongst the youth. Today youngsters are experimenting with their talent and interests and want to make a career out of their passion. "With India on a sustained growth path and the IT-ITeS industry esti
mated to cross USD 100 billion this year, there subsists a huge demand for skilled engineering graduates," says Dr Rajeev Shorey, President, NIIT University.
Nevertheless, an offbeat career is what youngsters are going in for these days. There is a wave of change among students, where making a profession out of things that interest one, has become a trend.
There are a lot of benefits attached with these offbeat careers. Most of the ambitious youth are happily placed in good brands and making their families proud after choosing an offbeat career. Pankhuri Agrawal working with a reputed radio station talks about why she chose an offbeat career. "When I started off with my career, I was not so sure about what I wanted to do with my life. The only thing that I knew was that I love music but neither I was singer or had core knowledge about music. Then I thought of opting for a ca
reer as a radio jockey. I was so relieved and happy after I started doing this job, as it turned out to be perfect for me. Yes, the intimidating thought did cross my mind that it might end up being a short journey for me, but I followed my heart and here I am. Today I play a variety of music at my station. Not just this, I am working with something
that I had loved for years. What a delight for me where I can enjoy my hobby and simultaneously get paid for it!" Sometimes an offbeat career like this can satiate your wishes. Pankhuri says that she gets paid really well in this job and along with that, gets lots of perks and of course, the love and support from her listeners.
Offbeat careers have become the foremost choice today. Girddhari Prakash, a counsellor shares that the thought process of youth has become liberated and they are no longer interested in doing regular job of being a doctor or engineer. "I meet hundreds of students everyday, coming to me, wanting to know what career path they should be opting. Today youngsters are no longer interested in becoming an engineer or a doctor. What they aspire for is taking up something as a career which coincides with their passion too. So what if they pick up an offbeat career of being a creative il
lustrator or being a cartoonist? Today there is a market and space for every work. And, do not worry about the monetary gains because good talent always gets paid well."
Suneel Galgotia, chancellor, Galgotias University, sums up, "Promising students are at the heart of every great nation. Our belief is that all students are thought seeds.
All students carry within themselves, the latent talent to become a giant banyan tree, given the best education and right nurturing environment."
